For example, if the temperature or humidity is too high, your data center is at serious risk for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/21887\/secure-environment-monitoring-room-alert\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">equipment overheating\/failure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, irreversible data loss, warping of materials and hardware corrosion. Temperature or humidity that is too low can lead to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/engineering\/electrostatic-discharge\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">electrostatic discharge (ESD)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can cause damage to sensitive components.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/4957\/updated-look-recommended-data-center-temperature-humidity\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2016<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and before that in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/3647\/recommended-data-center-temperature-humidity\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2005<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we talked about ASHRAE and their recommended data center temperature and humidity ranges. We have always placed a high level of importance on educating our customers and helping them keep their people, assets and facilities within safe working conditions. Those articles are some of our most popular and have helped thousands of customers establish, monitor and maintain appropriate data center environment conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this article, we\u2019ll be taking a look at the updated ASHRAE recommended data center temperature and humidity ranges, and how environment monitoring with Room Alert can help you keep your facilities as safe as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><b>What Are ASHRAE Recommended Temperature &amp; Humidity Ranges?<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Temperature<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashrae.org\/news\/esociety\/completed-research-rp-1755-february-2020\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ASHRAE<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) recommends an acceptable operating temperature range of 18\u00b0 to 27\u00b0C (64\u00b0 to 81\u00b0F). For environments with low levels of both copper and silver corrosion, the recommended temperature range is between 18\u00b0 and 21\u00b0C (64 to 69.8 \u00b0F).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Humidity<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ASHRAE recommends an acceptable relative humidity range of 20 and 80%. However, in environments with high levels of both copper and silver corrosion, ASHRAE states that the upper moisture level should be kept below 60% RH, possibly lower than 50%.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Data centers that are operating outside of ASHRAE recommended temperature and humidity ranges are at direct risk for potential disaster.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/4957\/updated-look-recommended-data-center-temperature-humidity\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">previous articles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> discussing recommended data center temperature and humidity ranges, we emphasized proactive environment monitoring as the best method to manage the environment in data centers and other tech spaces.
